There are special measuring tools and instruments for each range. We will tell you which are which.
The length measurements that DIY enthusiasts deal with are often in a range of centimetres. In furniture manufacture they are in millimetres and when working with metal they are in tenths of a millimetre. There are special measuring tools and instruments for each range, which are easy to handle and lead to accurate results.
As a rule, only clean, undistorted instruments guarantee correct measurement. If the measurement is just a few millimetres skew, this can cause a significant deviation.
The folding rule is most commonly used for measurement work. Nowadays it does not measure in inches, instead it has a centimetre scale and is actually called "metrestick".
A tailor's tape measure is suitable for measuring arches and curves. It adapts exactly to the shape of the object being measured.
Modern electronics make manual measurement easier and more precise; e.g. with the electronic inclinometer, which measures exact angles. Moreover, metal detectors can be used before drilling holes for fixings to determine whether there are cables or pipes under the plaster. The laser rangefinder measures distances particularly quickly and accurately.
Observe the following when using electronic devices: The measuring tools have to be recalibrated after severe shocks, battery changes and major changes in temperature. This is done either using operating keys or automatically. Especially rangefinders are very temperature-dependent. For this reason, good devices take the air temperature into account when measuring.
