Sanding is part of the preparation required for virtually every type of surface treatment work. Find out which is the right sander for which application.
Sanding is part of the preparation required for virtually every type of surface treatment work. However, you will also require different sanding tools for the various finishes:
The delta sander is suitable for working on corners; the random orbit sander can sand both flat and slightly curved surfaces. The orbital sander is used for material removal on smaller flat surfaces; the belt sander is used for sanding down large floor surfaces.
Orbital sanders and delta sanders have hardly any risk potential but the sanding dust must be constantly extracted. Random orbit sanders do not require any protective devices, either. As long as you hold the tool with both hands at the intended grip positions, nothing can go wrong.
In contrast, working with belt sanders demands a certain amount of practice. In order to prevent the machine from spontaneously accelerating forwards when it is lowered onto the workpiece, the belt sander always has to be applied very carefully. You should also hold the machine firmly without pressing too hard.
Sand all materials in several steps with increasingly finer grit (from grit 80 to grit 220 sanding paper). Also always move the sanding machine along the grain of the wood, never across it.
